Incubus Master Part 1 at Yaoi Prose

Incubus Master Cover

Jinady was forced to be a sex slave to a tribe of winged incubi for a year when he's rescued by the regal demon Figaru. Figaru brings Jinady to a settlement of mortals. Jinady learns that Figaru is the king of this settlement, and that he's been looking for a mate.

Figaru's adoring subjects start to match-make the two. Jinady finds himself falling for the noble demon king. He senses his feelings are being reciprocated.

Then Jinady discovers Figaru's former love interest Rowan is locked in a dark cabin with a magical 'blood chain' connecting his throat to a wall. Several demon allies are rallying to help Rowan, including Scor, the demon Figaru almost beat to death.

Jinady seeks the truth about what happened between Rowan and Figaru, while trying to resist the strong seductive lure of the demon king.

Part 1 of Incubus Master will be available free for adults to download on January 7th. You can get it right now by making a purchase of any amount at Everythingyaoi.com.

Incubus Master is an erotic ebook written by Yamila Abraham (Winter Demon, Dark Prince) and illustrated by Barbara Apostolico (Cain, Winter Demon). It will be serialized in eight parts over the coming weeks. Each section will have 6,000 to 7,500 words and a color illustration.

Yaoi Prose ebooks will help fund future Yaoi Press graphic novels. A portion of the money earned on Incubus Master will go toward the creation of Bastard King, the upcoming sequel to the Dark Prince series.

A Smarty Pig account has been set up for public view here, and has been linked to our main Twitter account. We hope with every new update we'll be closer to our goal of financing the art work for Bastard King.

A Yaoi Kindle Deal?

The Kindle is fantastic. I have held one of these nifty gadgets in my hand and been blown away with it's clear paper-like screen, long battery life, and amazing light weight.

I no longer have the Kindle I mentioned. I bought it for an Australian customer. She bought a Kindle DX and had it shipped to our worker Maria. Maria bought all the yaoi available for the Kindle and shipped it back to her.

Now the Global Kindle has come out, and my Australian friend wishes she had waited. (But we're helping her sell her old one for her, no prob).

The need for a Global Kindle is more pressing than the USA-only one that was originally launched. I only see the world in shades of yaoi. The UK and Australia have a great demand for English yaoi, yet little supply. I suggest that we make the Kindle the solution for our overseas yaoi fans. Let's make the Kindle investment twice as good for these starved yaoi and manga fans.

Digital Manga, I'm talking to you guys since you've put yaoi on the Kindle with me: Let's offer a Yaoi Kindle Deal. If someone from overseas is willing to pay $259 plus the $18 for Airmail shipping let's sell it to them with $200 worth of free yaoi manga preinstalled.

It won't be difficult to pull off. Akadot Retail and Everythingyaoi.com could become resellers of the Kindle and buy them wholesale. Then we offer them for sale with a selection of yaoi manga the customers can choose from, up to $200. The Kindle attaches to a computer with the same cord it uses to recharge. You can install PRC files on it without registering the Kindle on Amazon. I installed Winter Demon on the Australian girl's Kindle as a free gift to her before I registered it.

Even after loading 30 titles on their Kindles there will still be plenty more for them to buy for it. We will be seeding customers with the ability to buy our books where they can't usually do so. We can't count on these customers to buy a Kindle without this sort of incentive. It's a big investment. But when you offer them such added value I can see two girls pooling their money together to get one. (Then getting sick of sharing and buying their own).

Publishers should do this with the Kindle. Think of it as a video game console. Super Nintendo wouldn't have sold without that copy of Super Mario Bros. 2. Sega Genesis wouldn't have sold without Sonic the Hedgehog. (I'm dating myself, aren't I?). A dictionary or some public domain stuff doesn't sweeten the deal enough. The Kindle should have book bundles preinstalled to give fans of different genres the incentive to buy.

I'm willing to offer the Yaoi Press library as the free books they can select to get with the Kindle. I can't do this by myself, however. We don't have enough books! I need DMP or another Kindle-enabled publisher to join with me on this.

Why am I blogging about this instead of emailing them directly? I would have to commit ritual suicide if I got DMP to invest in this idea and it was a total flop. Consider this post my first step in market research.

Do you want to see this happen? Would you buy a yaoi-loaded Kindle? Then comment!

Yaoi and Kindle

UPDATE: There is a Global Kindle now. People in Australia can also read Kindle books on their computers!!

A somewhat infamous Australian customer recently bought a Kindle. I say infamous because every online yaoi shop will know who I'm talking about. She's the girl who buys $400+ worth of books twice a month or so. She buys multiple copies of the same title showing that she's selling the books in her native Australia.

A convention vendor did a show in Australia to sell dojinshi. He did terrible. This made me think there may not be a market for yaoi in Australia. Well, of course that's not true. Japanese language dojinshi have to be more easily accessed by Australians than English language manga. The demand there is for the translated stuff. That demand is not being met.

Our distribution to Australia has always been poor. The transportation costs of the books just add too much to the cover price to make retailers feel it's worth stocking.

They're wrong.

I see from this Australian girl's cottage industry that even when she's buying yaoi at American retail prices, adding the cost of shipping, and adding a tidy mark-up above that, she's able to sell the books by the box full. I've seen some of her sales listings. She has no problem getting the equivalent of $30 USD for a copy of Crimson Spell.

Still, it's not an ideal situation. We know how tight budgets can get. In the USA fans don't have enough money to buy all the yaoi they want. Imagine how that is for Australian fans? They don't have their own yaoi manga publishers there. It's all imports from the USA.

Enter the Kindle. My Australian friend saw Digital Manga's Kindle web site. She emailed Maria at our store everythingyaoi.com and asked what the heck a Kindle was. Her next email told us she'd bought one.

Digital distribution is the answer for countries like Australia. Shipping and customs costs make import of niche manga just too expensive. The Kindle would be a Godsend. Take away the customs costs. Take away the shipping costs. Even get it at a discount over USA retail prices. There would finally be an alternative to online piracy for them.

I hope Australians reading this didn't stop at the paragraph above and run out to buy a Kindle. If you did you'll find that you have to hunt for a reseller who ships to Australia. Then, once you get a power adaptor to charge the thing in an Australian outlet, you'll find that you can't download the Kindle ebooks. There's a region block. Even if one of your USA buddies lets you use their address to register it you won't be able to download the Kindle ebooks in Australia.

1. Dear Amazon - Make the Kindle work 100% in Australia! That would be such a boon to Yaoi Press and other niche publishers who have insurmountable hurdles exporting books there. It's better for the environment and cheaper for all concerned.

2. Dear Australians, for now, don't buy a Kindle unless you use it strictly as a PDF ebook viewer. You won't be able to download the Kindle ebooks unless you do what our friend did.

What did our friend do? She mailed Maria her Kindle with a shopping list. Right now it consists of every book DMP has offered via the Kindle. She's also going to get several Yaoi Press Kindle books for free. Although we're not live on the Kindle yet we have submitted the first couple of titles as of last week.

All Yaoi Press books will be available on the Kindle before the end of the year.

Maria has turned over this Kindle to me to put the Yaoi Press titles on it. We told our friend that we would do this.

I know I should have my own Kindle since this is a new platform for our books. (I also know I should have my own iPhone since our books are going up on iTunes). But I don't want one. As a consumer I have almost no need for one. I'd rather spend $300 to pay an artist to draw something for Yaoi Press. 'Borrowing' a Kindle like this is a great opportunity. I want to see what our books look like on the Kindle screen (as well as our friend publisher's books).

I'm not certain of the legality of doing this favor for my friend. From my perspective I see Kindle being most useful outside the USA. I resent that there's blocks in place. Yaoi Press books have universal English rights (we make most of our titles from scratch). Other companies don't have world-wide rights, and need to assure their license partners that they aren't overstepping their boundaries. That said, no one seems to be licensing yaoi in Australia. It's silly when there are already English language versions of the books out there.

There should be a way for Australians to be able to access those books without the enormous costs they face right now.

A Rest Between Shows

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind for Yaoi Press, and for me (Yamila) personally. I had several shows in fast succession starting with Anime Expo, then Otakon, then Anime Tucon.

Otakon was a great show, as usual. I regret not doing our Industry panel there. I know it's my fault for not making it happen. It's tough to keep track of every detail when there are so many shows in such a short time. I know a lot of people came by the booth saying the missed it this year. It was one of the few Yaoi Panels people under 18 could attend.

Anime Tucon stands out as one of the most fun conventions I've done in a long time. This was our first time in Tucson. I found the crowd was starved for Yaoi. I sold as many books to a show of 300 or so attendees as I usually sell at shows of 3,000.

The live yaoi shows caused a hysteria. People asked the participants to replay the scenes over and over, even to the point of being a nuisance. They really acted like they'd never seen two guys kiss before. Everyone was showing me the pictures and video they took of the scene with such amazement. They were asking me questions after, like if I ever set up shows like this before. They were trying to make the moment last as though it were a once in a lifetime thing. I remember that the reaction to the Live Yaoi Shows in Phoenix were more extreme than in other places, but Tucson really went nuts for them.

And for me also. I was attacked with unwelcome glomps several times when walking to my hotel room or the bathroom. New friend Warky (singer/songwriter/MC and fellow guest) jokingly commented that he needed to be my body guard when we were walking together. I took him up on this. As many people know I'm not comfortable hugging strangers. I do 'aura-hugs' so the kids at shows don't feel like I'm rejecting them. I've had shows were one or two people attack me with a hug without asking first. I never had to fight off as much love as at this show.

I know it's well-meaning. I don't mean for my boundaries to offend friendly kids. At the first show Yaoi Press did (PMX in California, 2005) I hugged a sweaty, grimey fan who passed their BO onto me for the rest of the day. I was throwing up in my mouth the rest of the day. I think it traumatized me about hugging strangers from then on. It made hugging people I don't know feel icky. When I hug a friend I get a warm feeling and I want to hold on. If I'm not there with a person yet I don't want to get that intimate. I hope people will understand.

I used to claim I was a germaphobe to avoid hugs, but I knew I couldn't get away with that at this show where I'm so close to the staff. I did a 'live yuri show' with con-chair AT on stage at closing ceremonies. I love her dearly!

Anime Tucon was the first show where I didn't hole up in my hotel room when I wasn't at a scheduled event. I played Mahjong with 3 new friends in the artist alley lobby area until it was time to do my Yaoi Hentaipalooza panel. This wasn't Mahjong solitaire like most people play on their computers. We played American-style 4 player mahjong. It was easy to learn and lots of fun. It was good research for the custom yaoi mahjong sets we'll be coming out with toward the end of the year.

There were many wonderful moments at this show. I'm so glad I came out. I'm looking forward to Otakumex, which is put on by the same group. I hope to see you there in September!

Anime Expo Yaoi Press Report!

AX was a wonderful show for us. Moreso than in prior years, it seemed. Having an endcap island in the dealer's room helped our visibility tremendously. We plan on exhibiting this way from now on.

There's so much to touch on. Here it is in list format:

* Yaoi Prose was announced! Our new illustrated ebook imprint was the big news at our Saturday morning panel. We're starting off with a Saihoshi continuation written and illustrated by the amazing Studio Kosen (teaser: Yinn fans will be pleased). The launch will also feature Winter Demon stories written by Yamila Abraham (me) and illustrated by a yet to be named top Yaoi Press artist. The tentative live date is the end of this year. Follow the Yaoi Press and Yaoi Prose Twitters for the fastest updates.

* Our first meeting with a production company was at the show (Valhalla Motion Pictures). We hope to move more towards film and other media, but the gay content does make our properties a tough sell to Hollywood. Here's hoping something pans out!

* Our exhibit was directly across from Media Blaster's. We flung the yaoi stress relief corns back and forth to each other. :D Yaoi fans occasionally intercepted.

* Dru Pagliassotti, professor, yaoi scholar, writer, and my editor for an upcoming nonfiction book on Boys Love I'm contributing to, was wrangled into working at our madhouse of a booth on Thursday. I know she hadn't planned on it. ~~; It was great to talk yaoi at an intellectual level for a bit. I can't imagine what she thought of Happy Yaoi Yum Yum. I did warn her!

* Winter Demon Cosplayers manned the booth Thursday and Saturday. I love them so dearly! Great staff = Show success. Sam, Carleena, Alison, Kailah – Fantastic work!

* 75 Copies of Happy Yaoi Yum Yum sold at the show!!! This is our all time record of sales for a single title at a convention. ;_; Everyone seemed to love it. Many happy fans came back to the booth with kudos.

* Much business discussed with Manager-san Mikako Ogata of Aurora Publishing. She was adorable in her schoolgirl cosplay! Our two companies have so much in common. Got to meet Elisa as well, who I pester at Aurora so very often. ~~; I feel great about collaborating with Aurora in the future.

* I sat at the Netcomics booth quite a while meeting with my very good friend, Vice President Soyoung Jung. Netcomics continues to be our digital distribution provider, and we agree the past two years have been a great success. We talked about other things though. I love that Netcomics USA is stronger than ever despite the bad economy. This is thanks to Soyoung. We compared notes on how little we sleep and how many hours we work. She has my workaholic record beat!

* My friends at Digital Manga Publishing gave me a lovely gift. A bottle of wine in a cloth sack. That was so nice of them! ;_; Sasahara-sensei himself carried the box of books I bought from them back to our booth. We walked and talked briefly. Anime Expo was a great chance to strengthen our friendship with this pillar of yaoi publishing. They've helped us so much over the years. ;_;

* I was also glad to meet with Rightstuf for a bit. They're moving cartloads of our books on their site. We will be expanding into our non-book merchandise with them, and may even do an exclusive item. :) I’m very happy that they're releasing more BL anime soon!

* Friday we had Dark Prince cosplayers! King Jereth and "Queen" Moors. It's funny to have a girl playing a guy dressed like a girl. :D They were amazing. These cosplayers were fans of the books I'd befriended last year. They surprised me with the Jereth and Moors costumes. I didn't make them cosplay my books—honest!

• Shoplifter boobytraps were one of our best ideas for the show. Nothing funnier than seeing a thief foiled and running away in terror. Next year we'll try to set up a video camera to catch some YouTube clips. Anime Expo is sadly the very worst show for shoplifting. All the dealers are on high alert. We were supported by plain-clothes security this year.

All in all a fantastic show for us. One of the very best we've ever done! I'm so glad I got all the networking I needed done here since we were too late to get exhibit space at San Diego Comic Con. AX was all about business this year. That suited me perfectly!

Point of Clarification on Docucopies Issue

I don't want to beat this dead horse much more. The coloring book that Docucopies chose not to print was handled by a local Las Vegas printer. It sold very well at Anime Expo last weekend.

I'm glad that Docucopies decided to clarify their position on what they will or will not print in this blog post. However, I take issue with this reply they placed in their comments:

"Regardless of when the term "disturbing" was first used, it should be clear that the woman who used it felt that way before it was divulged that all characters were male, otherwise she would not have raised issue with the job in the first place."

This is not true. Lynn called the pictures disturbing after I told her they were all male. I posted our email exchange in the order it happened in the May 27th entry about this.

There's some misuse of terms going on. Slander is untrue spoken statements that harms the reputation of a person or business. When these statements are in written form (such as comments to a blog post) it's called libel. Harmful statements are only slander or libel when they are untrue.

Much News

Yamila Abraham (me) will be a guest at Otakon this year. Please come to booth 117 in the dealers room to get your autographed copy of Happy Yaoi Yum Yum. We'll also have novelty corn stress relievers!

Before Otakon there is of course Anime Expo. I will be a guest there also at booths 739 and 838 in the dealers room. We have Winter Demon cosplayers decorating our booth! Make sure you plan to go to the Yaoi Press Industry Panel, Saturday at 11am in room LP 2.

Our fan art prints promotion was such a great success at Everythingyaoi.com that we've extended it until June 22nd. Don't miss this change to get copies of those beautiful fan art prints from popular yaoi and shounen-ai manga. (Including one drawn by me).

I think this week's Yaoi Not Actually is particularly funny. This free comic strip is updated every Thursday on Everythingyaoi.com.

Don't forget to enter the Yaoi Caption Contest! There's only a few days left!

New Yaoi Products

We will be debuting new yaoi bags at Anime Expo and Otakon this year.

Yaoi Banana Hearts Cell Phone / iPod Case $10 -

Thanks to the banana logo designer and the Yaoi Focus Group on Twitter who helped with this design.

We updated our Yaoi and Yuri bags which were originally released in 2007. $25 -

Since it's against the law for yaoi and yuri fans to walk around an anime convention without broadcasting that they're fans (California Penal Code) we're also debuting less expensive cinch-up backpacks. $10

We are hopefully going to have the Yaoi Poker Cards reprinted in time for the shows. The new decks are made from a different material than the first editions. They will be noticeably different. We also hope to have this key chain in time for AX:

Docucopies Find Yaoi Coloring Book "Disturbing"

I put an article on Ehow a while ago about how you could 'Print a Comic Book or Doujinshi Cheap.' We'd used Docucopies for printing. They are a photocopy company, not a comic printer, but provided a very economic solution for us.

We were happy with the doujinshi we'd published with them, so we proceeded with our next small run project, a yaoi coloring book. This morning they sent this email:

"Because of the nudity of this file we are unable to print this for you. The order before this one should not have been printed but did slide by without us looking through the entire book."

It doesn't pay for us to throw tantrums over things like this. However, I feel they've made a mistake. The coloring book is 16+. There are side views of nude characters, but naughty bits are not visible. There are no sex scenes, but some images are suggestive that sex is coming. It didn't even cross my mind that a printer might not agree to print it. I called and told them that the characters are all male. I think they might think the characters are female and we're showing bare breasts.

At any rate, here are what I see as the most 'extreme' images of the coloring book we sent them:

Update: This is the email I sent Docucopies:

Hello Lynn,

"I just wanted to follow up on the phone call. As I said, we formatted the coloring book with margins, even on the cover, so it could be printed by Docucopies and we could save money on it. At this point it would cost more money than the book is worth to reformat it for another printer. The coloring book would of course look better with full bleeds. We formatted it without them specifically so they could be printed with you.

It doesn't matter which pictures are inside the coloring book. We have hundreds to choose from. If you tell me which pictures are going too far I can swap them out for new ones. Please remember that the characters depicted are all male. They look pretty because this is a genre from Japan that's targeting female readers.

If I had been put on notice with the last comic book I sent you guys I would have known better than to keep sending projects like this your way."

Their response:

"Hi Yamila -
There are a number of page that I find disturbing and do not want to put our employees in the same position printing this book for you. Some of the pages are 5, 6, 23, 24, 28, 29. I am sorry but we will not print this book.
Lynn
Docucopies"

I'm extremely annoyed now. They don't want to work with me, even when I explained what a bad position they're putting us in. There is nothing in their TOS that says they won't accept risque material.

But what really makes me angry is this:

This is page 23 one of the images they found "disturbing." If you were me, what would you think?

I'm disgusted with you Docucopies.
